You may have heard of the Better Business Bureau (a/k/a BBB), but do you understand its purpose and the grading criteria they use to determine accreditation?
And even more importantly, how can they help consumers only do business with reputable companies?
Long before the internet…long before websites for consumer reviews like Angie’s List or Yelp…the BBB “has helped people find and recommend businesses, brands, and charities they trust.
Accreditation
The BBB accreditation system has offered consumers the confidence to deal with businesses for more than 100 years…that’s why accreditation by BBB is desired by those businesses who strive to always deliver the best in quality and service.
The rating system of BBB is designed to be fair to both businesses and consumers and considers the following factors in its ratings.:
- Business’s complaint history with BBB.
- Type of business
- Time in business
- Transparent business practices
- Failure to honor commitments to BBB
- Licensing and government actions known to BBB
- Advertising issues known to BBB
Each factor is allotted a certain range of scores, with the total score based on a 100 point scale. The scores are then graded; a business must achieve 97 to 100 total points to receive the A+ rating.
