Tips to Avoid Costly Roof Repair

The roof is a crucial part of a house structure. It does an important job of protecting the structure, people and everything inside. It keeps your home dry and comfortable. It also plays an important role when it comes to adding curb appeal to your home. Because your roof is important, it’s imperative that proper maintenance is done. This will avoid costly roof repair and increase its longevity. Spare yourself an unnecessary roof replacement and take note of the following maintenance tips.

Check inside your home

Timely roof repair will save you money

Several roof damages will be evident inside your home. Some signs of roof damage include bubbled paint on your walls or stained ceilings. Also take time to inspect your attic on a regular basis. Check if there is mold in the wood panels or any signs of moisture up there. When you catch a leak that’s only affecting your attic, the roof repair is going to be a lot cheaper and faster.

Check the shingles

The shingles are the most visible parts of the roof. It makes or breaks the curb appeal of your home. While most shingles are made of asphalt, others are of wood, slate clay and other materials. Shingles can get damaged due to bad weather conditions making it important to do a periodic inspection. Also don’t ignore issues once you see one and get them repaired right away. This will prevent any damage from getting worse.

Inspect the roof’s fascia

The fascia is the long wooden board running at the edge of the roof.  It is also often called the roof line. The fascia plays an important role in your roofing system. It helps seal your roof from small animals. It serves as ventilation for your attic and provides additional aesthetics. Because it is affected by the elements of weather, the fascia can be vulnerable to damages. Make your roof last longer by checking the fascia. Repair any damages as soon as possible.

Check the roof leaks

Roof leaks usually begin at a small area on the roof. These leaks often remain unnoticed until they cause serious damage to an entire roof. Don’t wait for these minor roof leaks to cause bigger trouble. Make it a habit to regularly check for signs of roof leaks.  See if there are spots on the ceiling or water dripping into the house.

Examine the soffit

The soffit is the board tucked underneath the fascia board. It is the one that you would usually notice if you’re looking from street level. The soffit helps your house breathe. It is usually ventilated so that there’s an adequate flow of air into the roof area. It also protects your rafters from mold and damage. Soffits usually get damaged due to water leaks and rodents. And to increase its longevity, be sure to do a regular inspection to see if there are any signs of rot. Get the issue addressed immediately.

Never ignore minor issues

Doing a regular inspection of your roofing system is paramount to making sure your roof lasts longer.  When you notice some issues, make sure to get them addressed no matter how minor they are. Never ignore any signs of damage or they will cause you more headaches in the long run. Find out the underlying cause and fix anything that needs fixing immediately. Minor damages that go untreated will result in extensive problems and expenses. This will make roof repair cost you an arm and a leg.

If you are concerned about your roof, you shouldn’t wait for any problem to get bigger before you start acting on it. Your roof is taking care of you and your entire family. This beautiful roof replacement was installed by East Fork Roofing in Carson City near the beginning of July of 2017.

To begin, the original composition shingle roofing materials were removed and disposed of by East Fork Roofing. After the underlying wooden structures were inspected, unpainted metal drip edge, 30 lb felt (an upgrade from the usual 15 lb underlayment) and new composition shingles were installed.

For this project, the client chose “Natural Wood” colored shingles from Malarkey Highlander. They are a very popular oxidized shingle and Malarkey is known for their quality roofing products. If you want to learn more about them, check out Malarkey’s website.

Roof Replacement: 306 Coral Way

After Photo

Today’s featured roof replacement was done by East Fork Roofing in Dayton, NV at the beginning of July in 2017.

The original roof was made of wood shake, but the client wanted to upgrade to asphalt shingles. East Fork removed the shake and had the old roofing materials hauled away. Next, they inspected the structures underneath. After that, they installed charcoal metal drip edge, 15 lb felt and new composition shingles. The shingles the client chose were Certainteed Landmark Premium in the color scheme called “Max Def Weatherwood”. If you would like more information on those shingles for yourself, check out Certainteed’s website here: https://www.certainteed.com/residential-roofing/products/landmark-premium/

As you can see, the roof also had ridge installed on the rakes. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, doing so adds even more wind protection. (East Fork Roofing installs their roofs according to manufacturer’s specifications to have high wind resistance, whether there is ridge on the rakes or not.)
